The Pennsylvania Wilds

Clearfield County is part of the Pennsylvania Wilds, a 12-county region spanning the northern part of the state which is known for its vast expanse of outdoor beauty and wildlife. More than 375 species of birds and countless animals call the Pennsylvania Wilds home, including the state’s majestic elk herd.

The elk can be seen as far south as Parker Dam State Park and Surveyor. To get  a close up view, bring the camera, extra batteries and binoculars, and head for the wildlife blinds in  the Quehanna Wild Area. Sit quietly, be patient, and wait for nature’s show to begin.

Don’t forget your fishing pole. There are more than 16,000 miles of streams in the Pennsylvania Wilds. One hundred two  miles of the West Branch Susquehanna River wind their way  through Clearfield County, so grab the bait and a fishing partner and get started!

The region has a rich heritage, tied closely to the lumber and coal industries. Kiosks throughout the Pennsylvania Wilds will guide you through a trail full of interesting history and give you a chance to experience local culture.

Clearfield County is no exception. Our many historic sites and entire districts stand as a living tribute to the industries that shaped the region’s future.  A trip through Coal Country will take you to and through the communities and history  of our miners, loggers and laborers, and is well worth the drive.

Learn about DuBois’s lumber history by visiting the three- building DuBois Historical Society. Looking for those hard-working ancestors? The DuBois and the Clearfield County Historical Societies are both wonderful genealogical resources.

Clearfield County has six exits along Interstate 80 to get you where you want to go in the Pennsylvania Wilds.

And if that isn’t enough, here’s one more reason to visit: Clearfield County is just 45 minutes from Penn State University action! For home games, graduation or other special university occasions, there are more than 1300 rooms throughout Clearfield County to provide you with economical close-to-the-action accommodations.
