Outdoor/Sports Enthusiasts
– April is a great month for Outdoor and Sports Enthusiasts in
the Backwaters of Clearfield County. Trout Season opens April
12, and there are hundreds of miles of water teeming with
rainbow, brookies and natives. Cast your line along the West
Branch of the Susquehanna River, Chest Creek, Clearfield Creek
or Anderson Creek. Curwensville Lake Recreation Area has five
picnic pavilions with lighting, electric and charcoal grills,
52 electric RV sites, 5 primitive tent sites and endless fish
begging to be caught. Fishing at Janesville Dam is handicap
accessible. Ask the locals about their favorite spot when you
stop for your bait at
Aletta’s Farm
Market, Jim’s Sports
Center, or Bressler’s Bait and More.
While you’re there, don’t forget to pick up your Pennsylvania
Wilds Fishing Guide which has loads of information for the
12-county region.
April is also a great time of year to drop your kayak or canoe
in the waters of the West Branch of the Susquehanna River. .
The Quehanna section of the Susquehanna has plenty of areas
that will challenge your paddling skills. Don’t have your own
watercraft? Rent one from
McCracken Canoe.
Ask about how to save on a shuttle trip. Stop at
the Down River Restaurant to get your maps, information and to
pick up a $5 pre-packed lunch for your trip.

the wilderness. This is a great time to put away your
snowshoes, slip into your hiking boots and explore the great
outdoors.
Parker Dam State Park has 13 trails with
different degrees of difficulty.
Bilger’s Rocks
is the county’s most unique geologic treasure. This 300+
million year old rock "city” offers an unbelievable experience
in hiking, exploring and rock climbing. You can also explore
our backwoods with your ATV at
Rock Run
Recreation Park . Join us and Q94 on April 19th
for the Ride for a Buck Day and give the 50 miles of trails a
try. Varying levels of trail difficulty are sure to thrill the
entire group.
Indoor Aficionado-
Ok so not all of us are ready to get outside, there is plenty
of indoor activity as well. The price of gas and heat are
controlling our pocket books, so come back to savings. Bring
the whole group and start with a day at the Bowling Alley.
Both Clearfield and DuBois have lanes that are reasonably
priced and are sure to bring a few laughs your way. After a
meal at the
Fortworth
or Ethan’s Café take in a movie at one of the local
theaters.
Maybe a day of culture is what you are seeking. The
Winkler
Gallery
in DuBois is a modern art studio that features all
types of fine art from our local artists. Come and find the
perfect piece to finish your home décor or add to your
collection.
The local wineries are sure to tempt your senses. Begin your
trek on the Backroads at the
Laurel Mountain Vineyards
in Falls Creek and sample their fruity varieties of
vino. It will also be a treat to walk back in time with the
antique tool museum located onsite. Can you identify the
mystery tools? Next make your way to
Evergreen Vineyards
in DuBois. This entire winery is run on Solar Power. Do
you know how the soil affects the taste of the wine? You will
when you leave this winery. Now make your way to the
Starr Hill Winery
in Curwensville. Sample a Bailey Road Red or
a sparkling wine, purchase a piece of Polish Pottery or find
an appetizer from their collection of fine dips. What a great
way to spend a day on the Backroads!
Museums are not just for the big cities. We have plenty of
museums to keep you here for an extended stay. Do you have
roots in Clearfield County? Spend some time with the genealogy
connoisseurs at the DuBois Historical Society Museum.
Leave yourself enough time to visit the Veterans’ Room, the
history of Tom Mix and the Dubois Brewery. The Clearfield
Historical Society Museum is jam packed with items that
tell the story of the lives that settled and built up
Chinklacamoose. Let the staff take you down the Susquehanna
with tales of the region’s rich lumber heritage. Mining was
also a key industry in Clearfield County. The Coal Museum
in Coalport is sure to send you home with a new appreciation
of the lives of the men and women who worked down under. Want
to see one of the largest displays of Crosley Cars in the
East? Visit the Grice Museum in Clearfield PA.
