Start your adventure at Bilger’s Rocks, preferably before the day gets too hot. These sandstone formations are around 300 million years old, with towering walls, narrow passageways and maze-like paths you can wander through. It looks like the sort of place that requires a lengthy hike and specialized equipment. Happily, it’s just a five-minute walk from the parking lot. (Faster if your kids are really excited.)
Take your time exploring. Then point the car toward Curwensville.

By midday, Curwensville Lake is exactly where you want to be. The recreation area surrounds a 790-acre lake and offers hiking, fishing, boating, a beach. There are seven hiking trails if you still have energy after rock-hopping at Bilgers. Or plenty of room to simply find a spot and enjoy the view.
Local tip: Keep an eye on the sky while you’re there. Bald eagles are known to frequent the lake.
Grab lunch in Curwensville or Clearfield, then head north toward DuBois for a very different kind of wildlife.

Doolittle Station is difficult to explain without sounding like we’re making parts of it up.
There are historic railcars. A railroad museum. Brick-oven pizza. Mini golf. And more than 40 life-size dinosaurs, many of which move and roar.
It might not make total sense. But it makes for one heck of a photo op—and the perfect way to end the day.
Because Summer in Clearfield is pretty wild: ancient rocks in the morning, lake time in the afternoon and dinosaurs before dinner. Because why not!
