When Denny Liegey opened Denny’s Beer Barrel Pub in 1977, his idea was simple: make massive hamburgers that would get people’s attention, then give them a fun place and a great menu worth coming back for.
Mission accomplished.
The original challenge was a two-pound burger served on homemade buns so large, they needed to bake in coffee cans. Today, that’s basically the beginner level. The challenges climb to three pounds, six pounds and eventually the 15-pound, adequately-named the “Belly Buster.”
All that excess got noticed. Denny’s has appeared on the Food Network, Travel Channel, Good Morning America, Today and even David Letterman’s Top 10. Not bad for an idea that started in a 600-square-foot pub in Clearfield.

Here’s the part that can get lost beneath several stories of hamburger: Denny’s is also just a good local pub.
There are normal-sized burgers and more than 46 varieties of wings, plus appetizers and beers on tap, including craft and local brews. And that’s really the essence of Denny Liegey’s original idea. The giant burgers get people through the door. The food, atmosphere and local following have kept them coming back for nearly 50 years.
When you visit Clearfield, come hungry.
How hungry is entirely up to you.
